Oxford Brookes University was formerly the Polytechnic in Oxford. Like most British polytechnics, it was officially upgraded to a university in 1992, but its history can be traced back to the 19th century. The university was named in memory of former president John Henry Brooks, who did a lot of basic work for the university during his tenure and made important contributions to the future development of the university. Oxford Brookes University has been described by The Guardian as one of the best new universities. The university has been selected as the best new university by The Times for ten consecutive years.
